Tylorstown (under 15's) 0 Caerphilly (under 15's) 45
Sunday April 20th. 2008.
In what was to be the final game of the season we travelled up the A470 to Tylorstown in the Rhondda Valley. Well most of us did,Scoop managed to get lost again in Treforest.Time to change the batteries in the Sat Nav Scoop.
Tylorstown famous for Legendary World boxing champion Jimmy Wilde.149 fights only 4 defeats! Famously known as the 'Tylorstown Terror',they have even named the car park after him!
In the very first minute Caerphilly got on the scoresheet. The ball spread quickly along the backs for wing Ryan Davies to sprint over for a try.Stephen Williams adding the conversion.0-7.
This early score was detrimental to Caerphilly. They took their foot of the throttle, which resulted in them making mistake after mistake. Two successive strikes against the head by Joseph Carey got Caerphilly moving again, and after 20 minutes they were back on the scoresheet. Some good interplay by the backs saw Jamie Sollis break, before linking with Anthony Davies who went over in the corner for a try.
Another strike against the head by Carey put Caerphilly on the front foot, but again poor handling was letting them down.
It took a trademark run by Jamie Sollis to raise the tempo.Breaking from a scrum on the half way line he put Jordan Purcell away 30 metres out,but some good covering by the home defence held him up just short of the line.Another take against the head saw Jamie Sollis try to force his way over, but again was held up short of the line.
Finally Caerphilly moved the ball wide for wing Anthony Davies to score near the corner flag.

Half Time:Tylorstown (under 15's) 0 Caerphilly (under 15's) 17

A good talking to at half time saw a different Caerphilly side start the second half. Some good pressure saw Caleb Ball break through to score, which was converted by Stephen Williams. 0-24 after 37 minutes.
A minute later outside half Bradley Hill sliced through the defence to put Kieron Perry away to score under the posts.Stephen Williams adding the conversion.0-31 after 38 minutes.
More Caerphilly dominance saw speedster Jordan Purcell race away from 50 metres to touchdown under the posts.Again Stephen Williams added the conversion.0-38.
Straight from the kick off the ball was moved to Stephen Williams who broke the home defence, and found Bradley Hill in support who raced over to score the final try of the game.Stephen Williams adding the conversion.

Full Time:Tylorstown (under 15's) 0 Caerphilly (under 15's) 45

Scorers:Anthony Davies(2),Ryan Davies,Ball,Perry,Purcell,Hill, tries.
Stephen Williams 5 conversions.

Afterwards we were all stuck in the 'Tylorstown Terror' car park for hours.A good little earner for the rugby club. You cant go anywhere so spend some money in the bar.I think I'll take that idea to Dragons Den.By the way has anyone seen Scoop?

JOKE OF THE WEEK!!

A English family was considering putting their grandfather (Hubert) in a nursing home.
All the facilities were completely full so they had to put him in a Welsh home.
After a few weeks in the welsh facility, they came to visit grandpa.
'How do you like it here?' asks the grandson..
'It's wonderful! Everyone here is so courteous and respectful,' says grandpa.
'We're so happy for you. We were worried that this was the wrong place for you. You know, since you are a little different from everyone.'
'Oh, no! Let me tell you about how wonderfully they treat the residents,' Hubert says with a big smile, 'There's a musician here -- he's 85 years old. He hasn't played the violin in 20 years and everyone still calls him 'Maestro'!'
'There is a judge in here -- he's 95 years old. He hasn't been on the bench in 30 years And everyone still calls him 'Your Honour'!'
'There's a dentist here -- 90 years old. He hasn't fixed a tooth for 25 years And everyone still calls him 'Dentist'!'
'And me -- I haven't had sex for 35 years and they still call me 'The F****** Englishman!'

TOUR TO BLACKPOOL 4TH-7TH.APRIL
With our last four games being cancelled due to weather conditions, and opposition crying off.It was a great relief to get away on a jolly boys outing to the delights of Blackpool.
We assembled on the Friday morning to find our coach was so old it had an outside toilet! The numberplate was in Latin and the driver made Gordon Brown look happy.
We arrived at our luxurious accommodation in the afternoon, and soon went out to visit the local museum and art gallery.Arriving back for our evening meal,we soon settled down for an early night at 8.00pm.After all there was a big game against the English the following morning where we were defending our record of never losing to an English side.

Vale Of Lume (under 15's) 12 Caerphilly (under 15's) 39
Saturday April 5th.2008.

Caerphilly were dominant from the start and had all the territory. After just 10 minutes Jamie Sollis broke from a ruck 20 metres from the try line and went over near the corner.0-5
Some two minutes later some good handling from the backs saw wing Lee Robbins score near the corner 0-10.
It was all Caerphilly now, with their pack outplaying the heavier opposition.
Again some more good handling by the backs saw ever present flanker Kieron Perry pop up to run in a try in the corner.Three tries in fifteen minutes but all scored in the corner making it difficult to convert on a wide pitch.
With the sun shining, this encouraged the boys to run the ball. Some good play saw Stephen Williams receive the ball 30 metres out,and a superb dummy saw him slice through the Lume defence to score a try, this time under the posts. For some strange reason Caleb Ball took and duly missed the conversion! 0-20 after 25 minutes.

The English ruling of no lifting in the lineouts was resulting in them becoming a bit of a lottery. This is normally one of our strong areas, and it was getting a bit frustrating that we could not secure some decent ball.
Vale Of Lume were far from finished though and a good phase of play saw them in Caerphilly's 22.Then on the stroke of half time a good break by their centre saw him score a very good try.

Half Time: Vale Of Lume (under 15's) 5 Caerphilly (under 15's) 20

The first ten minutes of the second half was evenly matched. But then some good movement by the Caerphilly threequarters saw Sam McCombe hand off a covering tackler to run in behind the posts from 30 metres. With the Caerphilly boys holding back Caleb Stephen Williams added the conversion 5-27.

Again the game was evenly contested over the next 15 minutes, with no side looking like scoring. Then some nice handling saw the ball moved to flanker Adam Clark to cross for a try that went unconverted.5-32
Straight from the kick off Jamie Sollis collected and a strong run upfield found Jacob Wright in support to force his way over for a score under the posts.Stephen Williams adding the conversion.5-39
With the game won, Caerphilly let their guard down and some poor defensive work allowed Lume to score under the posts which was converted and the last play of the game.

Final Score:Vale Of Lume (under 15's) 12 Caerphilly (under 15's) 39

Scorers:Sollis,Robbins,Perry,S.Williams,McCombe,Clark,Wright tries.
S.Williams 2 conversions.

Afterwards in the clubhouse we enjoyed some fine food and some great hospitality. We stayed to watch the Grand National and a good time was had by all.
Thankyou Vale Of Lume!! We welcome you to a return fixture if your ever down in South Wales.
We returned to our penthouse suites for an evening meal. Some stayed in to watch television, some read books.Others played bingo.Another early night for most with another match in the morning.

Preston Grasshoppers(under 15's) 0 Caerphilly (under 15's) 56
Sunday April 6th.2008

After a hearty breakfast we set out with Happy Gilmore our bus driver to the famous Lancashire club of Preston Grasshoppers.
On a nice sunny day, ideal for running rugby the first five minutes was full of infringements from both sides.
Soon though with Caerphilly camped in the opposition 22, Centre Stephen Williams made a classic break to cut through and score under the posts.Bradley Hill adding the conversion.0-7 after 6 minutes.
Shortly after more pressure from Caerphilly saw flanker Kieron Perry peel off from a maul to score in the corner.Bradley Hill narrowly missing the conversion from the touchline.0-12 after 11 minutes.
It was all Caerphilly now and a superb break by Bradley Hill found wing Ryan Davies who sprinted away to score in the corner.0-17 after 18 minutes.
Caerphilly continued to run the ball when they could and some slick handling by the backs put Ryan Davies away to score his second try.A superb conversion by Bradley Hill taking the score to 24-0,after 24 minutes.
A minute later a break out from their own line saw the ball handed on to full back Sam McCombe who sprinted in from 50 metres to score behind the posts.Hill adding the conversion.0-31
After 29 minutes,Captain Bradley Hill showed his ruthless streak by deciding to kick for goal with a penalty rather than run it.He duly kicked it from 35 metres.0-34.
On the stroke of half time Hill was again on the score sheet running in another try.

Half Time:Preston Grasshoppers (under 15's) 0 Caerphilly (under 15's) 39

A minute into the second half and a lovely break by Stephen Williams, saw him run around behind the posts to score.Only he didn't! He somehow managed to get held up and no try was given. This will shortly be on You Tube-Watch this space!
After 34 minutes a lovely chip ahead by Kieron Perry saw him collect the bounce and score an opportunist try.
Preston didn't give in though, and worked their way into the Caerphilly 22,but some strong defence by Caerphilly prevented them from crossing the whitewash.
Shortly after with the away side moving upfield a well judged kick from Stephen Williams was collected by speedster Ryan Davies who crossed for his hat trick of tries.Stephen Williams converting.0-51.
Caerphilly continued to pile on the pressure, and a storming run from Jamie Sollis found Joseph Carey up in support to cross for his trademark tour try.Sam McCombe missing the conversion.
The final whistle went with Caerphilly worthy winners 56-0.Thus ensuring their 100% record against English sides was kept intact. Well played Preston who never gave up,and had the balls-in more ways than one!

Final Score: Preston Grasshoppers(under 15's) 0 Caerphilly (under 15's) 56

Scorers:Ryan Davies(3),Perry(2),S.Williams,McCombe,Carey,Hill tries.
Hill 1 penalty,2 conversions.S.Williams 1 conversion.

PETER ALAN MAN OF THE MATCH-RYAN DAVIES.

Again in the club house afterwards we enjoyed some nice food and hospitality. We more than welcome Preston to a return fixture if you are ever down in South Wales. Thanks Very Much for the game and welcome.

We got back on the bus with Happy, and returned to our accommodation for some evening tea and cakes.A quiet night was had by all, with everyone resting up for the long journey back home the following day. The boys are so dedicated to their sport that they all decided to go for a run around midnight. What dedication! Well done lads!!

JOKE OF THE WEEK!!

A man walks into his living room and a toad in the hole flies past his head.A little later his wife opens the bathroom cabinet and is hit in the face with a spaghetti bolognese.
Their son walks into the kitchen and just avoids a chicken curry.
The family don't know where their next meal is coming from!

Many Thanks to Steve and Tony for organising the tour.A lot of hard work goes into arranging these. Thanks to all the boys for all the hard work in fundraising. This meant that your trip and kit was paid for. Also well done for your good behaviour on tour.Keep it up!!

Caerphilly (under 15's) 27 Cwmbran (under 15's) 12 Sunday March 2nd. 2008
Well! Well! It's just like the old bus quote-you wait for one for ages, and then three turn up.We were actually going to play our third game in a row, special ties are being produced for this historic event.
Before that though,I was in Morrisons the other day and a guy in front of me at the checkout was paying for some lambs liver, and a bottle of Chianti.I knew I'd seen him somewhere before.I thought he was Uncle Albert off Only Fools And Horses. But then I realised he was dead. A few days later I was reading the Campaign, and staring out at me was the very same bloke who I had seen in Morrisons--Sir.Anthony Hopkins!!

Apparently he had been in town to unveil a statue of Tommy Cooper, the famous Welshman with a Devonshire accent.Apparently he was born In Llwyn Onn Street, but moved to Exeter as a young child when his mother found out that Fat Boy Tony Williams was living only 100 yards down the road!

THE MATCH.

Caerphilly entertained Cwmbran again with a stronger side than the previous fortnight.
The home side started strongly, and after just three minutes a nice move along the back line saw Full Back Sam McCombe go over in the corner with an excellent conversion by Stephen Williams- 7-0.
Cwmbran fought back, but some poor handling errors spoiling their momentum.
With the game evenly poised a storming run out of defence by Jamie Sollis saw him run 80 metres upfield, only to be tackled just short of the line.On hand though was Bradley Hill to take a scoring pass and go over for a try near the corner.12-0 after 25 minutes. The game continued to be played near the halfway line with no side making any inroads into the others half.

Half Time: Caerphilly (under 15's) 12 Cwmbran (under 15's) 0

Caerphilly made two changes at half time bringing on Jacob Wright and Joel Cousins.
An early strike against the head by Hooker Joseph Carey saw Caerphilly move the ball along the line only for the ball to be knocked on with the line at their mercy.
Back came Cwmbran and after 37 minutes they were on the attack and some nice handling by their backs saw them go over in the corner for a good try.12-5
A good forward drive by the home side saw them move 50 metres upfield to Cwmbran's line with a try begging the ball went out for a line out. From this a drive by Jamie Sollis found Jacob Wright in support to crash over for a score.17-5 -32 minutes.
Ten minutes later, another take against the head by Carey this time on Cwmbran's line saw scrum half Jacob Wright use his strength to force his way over for his second try, again unconverted. 22-5 after 51 minutes.
Caerphilly were again making unforced errors, which allowed the visitors back into the game.Sure enough they scored a try when their centre cut through from 10 metres to score a try that went converted.22-12-54 minutes.
Back though came the home side, and 15 metres out Jamie Sollis broke from a scrum and passed to wing Ryan Davies to score near the corner for the last score of the game.

Final Score:Caerphilly (under15's) 27 Cwmbran (under 15's) 12

Scorers:McCombe try,Wright (2 tries),R.Davies try,Hill try. S.Williams one conversion.

Gwent Dragons cup
Caerphilly (under 15's) 3 Ystrad Mynach (under 15's) 29
Sunday February 24th. 2008
Having played just two games in thirteen weeks,Caerphilly were sadly lacking match fitness for the visit of local rivals and current Gwent Dragons cup holders Ystrad Mynach.
Ystrad started the stronger and after just 4 minutes narrowly failed with a penalty kick at goal. The first ten minutes was dominated by Ystrad, and after 14 minutes a poor kick out of defence by Caerphilly found the Ystrad wing who sped down field to score a try in the corner.0-5.
The Ystrad Mynach pack were now dominating all phases and this pressure saw them score another try, which again went unconverted.0-10 after 21 minutes.
Caerphilly held out until half time giving them a chance to re-group.

Half Time: Caerphilly (under 15's) 0 Ystrad Mynach (under 15's) 10

After 37 minutes Caerphilly were awarded a penalty on the Ystrad 22 metre line, and Outside Half Bradley Hill slotted the kick to peg the score back to 3-10.
This revival was short lived however, when from a scrum close to the home side's try line a clever back row move by Ystrad saw them cross for a try which was converted.3-17 after 40 minutes.
With the game drifting away,Caerphilly made several changes to give squad members a run out.The gaps were starting to appear now with some tired legs out there and after 52 minutes Ystrad crossed for another try which again went converted.3-24.
Caerphilly kept battling away, but in the dying seconds the visitors scored another try in the corner which went unconverted. Congratulations to Ystrad Mynach, and best of luck in the next round.

Final Score: Caerphilly (under 15's) 3 Ystrad Mynach (under 15's) 29

JOKE OF THE WEEK!!

"I know," says the man,'and that's just the tip of the iceberg."

Caerphilly (under 15's) 19 Cwmbran (under 15's) 12
Sunday February 17th. 2008
The old quill is in danger of drying up with the lack of games to report on.Matches are getting thinner by the week-a bit like John Wright's hair!
Rumour has it that we are going to be called "The Tampax Green Army" as we are only in play once a month!"
Anyway shock horror we did actually play a game against Cwmbran. It was a close call mind with a heavy overnight frost delaying kick off while the ground thawed out a bit.Caerphilly were depleted with several players called up for training elsewhere.
The early exchanges saw Caerphilly dominate the scrums constantly pushing the Cwmbran pack back. This resulted in a take against the head by hooker Joseph Carey which saw Stephen Williams sprint over to score in the corner,he then added the conversion with a superb kick from the touchline.7-0 after 10 minutes.
Caerphilly continued to dominate the scrums but couldn't put any further points on the board.A substitution saw Thomas Candy replace Jamie Sollis in the pack.
The home side were making far too many handling errors. And on the stroke of half time they were punished when Cwmbran pounced on a dropped pass to score a try under the posts which was converted.

Half Time:Caerphilly (under 15's) 7 Cwmbran (under 15's) 7

Caerphilly came storming out of the blocks in the second half and early pressure saw the ball passed to full back Sam McCombe who stormed over for a try in the corner, with yet another fine conversion from the touchline by Stephen Williams.14-7 after 34 minutes.Soon after Cwmbran failed with a penalty kick at goal.
Cwmbran were fighting back strongly and a turnover near the half way line saw them score a breakaway try which went unconverted 14-12 after 38 minutes.
It was game on now with the game finely balanced.Caerphilly found themselves in the oppositions 22 and from a maul Caleb Ball broke to score a try, which went unconverted.19-12 after 52 minutes.
Caerphilly continued to make far too many handling errors which allowed the visitors to camp inside the home side's 22.With just a few seconds remaining and last play called, Cwmbran created an overlap and a try was certain only for them to knock on.The final whistle went and Caerphilly had hung on for victory.

Final Score: Caerphilly (under 15's) 19 Cwmbran (under 15's) 12

The Match.

After yet another three week gap between fixtures.Caerphilly made the short journey up the A470 to play Llantwit Fardre. On a bitterly cold morning Caerphilly soon got on top of the home side, and after only 3 minutes were on the scoresheet with a trademark try from centre Stephen Williams.Shortly after a classic break by outside half Bradley Hill saw him put full back Sam McCombe over for a try near the touchline.A superb conversion from Stephen Williams saw Caerphilly 12-0 ahead after 10 minutes. Caerphilly were now camped permanently in the home sides half, ander after 17 minutes a perfectly weighted kick by Bradley Hill bounced up into the arms of Kieran Perry who crossed for a try under the posts, again converted by Stephen Williams. Some enforced changes saw Nathan 'The Hitman' Jones leave the field and a re-shuffle saw Williams move to scrum half,Carey to hooker,Perry to flanker, and Davies to centre. These had little effect on the Caerphilly performance and two strikes against the head by Joseph Carey saw Caerphilly move closer to the Llantwit line. From a resulting ruck Jamie Sollis forced his way over for a try converted by Stephen Williams.

Half Time: Llantwit Fardre(under 15's) 0 - Caerphilly(under 15's) 26

A few more changes at half time saw Tom Maloney,Thomas Candy and Caleb Ball come on. A bit of a slow start to the half, but after 40 minutes Bradley Hill cooly dropped a goal from 22 metres.Caerphilly were trying to spin the ball whenever they could and some good runs from Jordan Purcell kept them on the attack. After 43 minutes Caleb Ball hit the line at pace and ran through from 25 metres to score a superb try- 0-34. With the away side's pack now well on top winning both the oppositions lineouts and scrums,it wasn't long before Jamie Sollis again stormed over for a try which was converted by Stephen Williams. Fair Play to the home side they kept trying to the end with some spirited defence. However with minutes remaining it was again Jamie Sollis on the rampage storming over for his hat trick of tries for the final score.

Final Score: Llantwit Fardre (under 15's) 0 - Caerphilly (under 15's) 46

PETER ALAN MAN OF THE MATCH - NATHAN 'THE HITMAN' JONES.

Llantwit Fardre (Under 15's) 0 - Caerphilly (Under 15's) 46
Sunday December 16th 2007
Having not played since last year Caerphilly entertained a depleted Ystrad Rhondda who had 11 regulars out with district commitments.
I know the writer normally expatiates, but for this week only there is no grandiloquence from me as having lent my dictionary to Nathan'The Hitman' Jones for him to stand on to reach his clothes hook in the changing rooms, he hasn't as yet given it back to me.

After two minutes into the game an early attack saw lock Bobby Dickinson break away for a try converted by Stephen Williams. Two minutes later outside half Bradley Hill put a well placed kick downfield followed by wing Jordan Purcell who showed good skill in kicking ahead to collect and score.12-0 after 4 minutes.
From the resulting kick off Bryn Wilks collected and broke downfield and found Bradley Hill on his inside to cross for a try, again converted by Stephen Williams.Another sweeping move by Caerphillysaw Jordan Purcell held up short of the line. Some good defence by Ystrad keeping the home side at bay.A good break by Stephen Williams put Purcell over for another score.24-0 after 12 minutes. Not long after a storming break by Jamie Sollis gained the hard yards, and put Stephen williams away to sprint 60 metres for a try.A few minutes later a good catch by Jordan Purcell saw him put in an excellant kick ahead, up in support was Kieran Perry who gathered to cross near the posts.Stephen Williams converting.36-0 after 19 minutes.
A sniping run by Bradley Hill saw him score under the posts for another converted try.
On the stroke of half time another try by Sam McCombe taking the score to 48-0

Half Time: Caerphilly (under 15's) 48 Ystrad Rhondda (under 15's) 0

The second half started with Caerphilly moving the ball along the line for Brynmor Wilks to cross Sam McCombe narrowly missing the conversion. 53-0.
As is the normal practice the referee offered to blow up early as the 50 point mark had been reached. However the Ystrad coach gamely wanted to carry on.
Another length of the field move saw Bryn Wilks feed Jordan Purcell who crossed the line for his hat trick of tries. Shortly after another long run of 60 metres saw Stephen Williams score his second try from a long way out.
A few minutes later Gavin Davies stretched his legs and sprinted 50 metres for another fine try.
With that, and after ten minutes of trhe half it was agreed to call full time.
Full credit to the Ystrad Rhondda boys who never gave up,and played in the spirit of the game.Well done lads!

Text your answer to 07950 311588. First correct answer randomly selected by our independent jew dictator on Monday December 3rd. (no limit to number of entries) will win two used tickets for England v Wales at Twickenham next year.

On a lovely day for rugby the first few minutes were honours even with both sides testing each other out.Caerphilly found themselves 15m.from the try line and an excellent drive from a lineout saw flanker Jacob Wright peel off for a try that went unconverted. Tonyrefail fought back and only some stout defence kept them out.
Caerphilly again found themselves in a good field position and another drive from a lineout saw outside half Dylan Thomas begin at the begining and end over the line for a second try.The conversion attempt sailing away past the upright 0-10 after 12 minutes. A good attack by Tonyrefail was thwarted by Anthony Davies who put in a superb clearance kick, which took play up to the home sides 22m. line. From the resulting scrum some good pressure from Caerphilly saw the back row of Wright, Clark, and Ball storm through for Caleb Ball to run over for a try, Dylan Thomas failing with the conversion.
Minutes later more good play by Caerphilly's forwards saw them in the home sides 22 and again Caleb Ball was on the score sheet with a well taken try.Dylan Thomas must have been on the pop the night before as he missed another conversion.0-20 after 23 minutes. Soon after a well worked lineout between Joseph Carey and Rhys Williams saw Williams cross the line only for the referee to disallow the try for not straight.Which looked a borderline desicion.
With half time approaching a loose kick by Tonyrefail found Dylan Thomas swerving in and out of the home side's defence (he definitely must have been on the pop the night before!) before finding Caleb Ball in support to take a scoring pass to get his hat trick in the space of 12 minutes.

Half Time: Tonyrefail (under 15's) 0 - Caerphilly (under 15's) 25

If Caerphilly thought this game was in the bag they were in for a shock. For with the local chapel service just ending, out of the bushes changing from their suits into their rugby kit came the Tonyrefail big guns.Five substitutes who soon made their prescence felt. After 35 minutes of the game some strong running from the Ton backs saw them cross for a good try which was well converted 7-25. More pressure from Tonyrefail saw them straight back into Caerphilly's 22 and a good drive from their forwards saw them power over for another try which went unconverted 12-25 after 40 minutes.
The home supporters were now getting more vocal with their team now back in the game. Especially the lady in red,and the woman with blonde hair blue jeans.
Two minutes later saw Tonyrefail back on the score sheet with a good kick into the corner which was well followed up resulting in a score.17-25 after 42 minutes. In the space of 12 minutes Caerphilly had conceded 17 points!!
This proved to be the wake up call they needed and soon Caerphilly worked their way back into the home side's 22m.Some indiscipline from the home side saw them down to 14 men with one player having to say good bye to it all.
With the players now high on emotion, and a Tonyrefail man on the line.Caerphilly's Dylan Thomas ran like poetry in motion passing on to Jordan Purcell who jinked his way over for a try .17-30 after 48 minutes.
A kick upfield by Anthony Davies saw Caerphilly move near the home sides tryline, but good defence kept them out. With just 5 minutes remaining it was now all Caerphilly but they couldn't turn this pressure into points.
Tonyrefail didn't give up though, and running the ball from inside their own half they moved the ball quickly along the backs to score under the posts which was converted.
With just seconds remaining a superb touchfinder by wing Lee Robbins brought the game to an end.

Final Score: Tonyrefail (under 15's) 24 - Caerphilly (under 15's) 30

Garndiffaith (Under 15's) 12 - Caerphilly (Under 15's) 22
Sunday November 11th 2007
On Remembrance Sunday let us remember the men who made the supreme sacrifice. An article appeared the other day which went something like this.
It is close to a century since the first cenotaph ceremonies marking the end of the great war "At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month".It had been the war to end all wars and it cost the lives of eight million serviceman and six and a half million civilians.
Instead it was the prelude to the even greater carnage of world war two with it's fifty six million dead.Since the end of world war two - 1945 the U.K. has been involved in conflict every year since, with the exception of 1968.
In the last decade of the last century.73 countries were engaged in conflicts which according to the international peace research institute killed five and a half million, including a million children. At the time, the state of war and peace atlas revealed that 200,000 children under 15 were part of the world's 23 million armed forces with warfare now costing more than £500 billion a year.
Makes you think doesn't it?

The Match.

After a two week sabbatical it was back on the road, and to the strains of "Have you news about my boy Jack?" we headed off to Torfaen and the village of Garndiffaith.
Garndiffaith incidentally is welsh for 'Back over the fence please'.
With a very strong South Easterly wind behind their backs Caerphilly kicked off and were soon camped in the home sides half. A nice move from the threequarters saw the ball being moved swiftly along, only for the ball to be dropped when a score looked possible. They say everything comes in three's,and sure enough Caerphilly had another two try scoring opportunities only for the ball to be dropped again in the backs.
Caerphilly were now having all the territory and some slick handling saw hooker Joseph Carey cross the line only for the referee to blow up for a forward pass.Having taken a heavy tackle as he crossed the line Joseph went off injured with Kieran Perry moving to hooker and Rob Billingham coming into the second row.
With all this pressure it wasn't long before Caerphilly broke the deadlock with scrum half Jacob Wright powering over for a try from close range. 0-5 after 14 minutes.
With Jamie Sollis on top form and outstanding in both attack and defence another score looked imminent.Outside half Bradley Hill was now running the show and some good passing saw wing Tom Maloney put away only to be held up just short of the line.Lock Bobby Dickinson continued with his perturbation of the Garndiffaith lineout, and only some excellant Garn defence kept the score down to 0-5.As the whistle blew for half time the home side must have been very pleased with the scoreline having played into such a strong wind.

Half Time: Garndiffaith 0 - Caerphilly 5

With no letting up of the wind,an interesting spectator was Sir Ranulph Fiennes who apparently spends a lot of time in Garndiffaith as preparation for his polar expeditions.
Caerphilly rung the changes for the second half with Luke Greenhaf,Nathan Jones,Thomas Candy and Anthony Davies coming on for Ryan Davies,Jacob Wright,Rhys Williams and Tom Maloney. Also returning was hooker Joseph Carey.
Despite the elements Caerphilly started strongly and got themselves into a good field position. After 35 minutes the outstanding Jamie Sollis broke through for a try under the posts, which Bradley Hill converted 0-12.
Back came Garn who were now starting to get into the game more.An excellant move saw them break away for what looked like a certain score, only for a superb cover tackle by Sam McCombe stopping them.
With forwards Caleb Ball,Adam Clark and the insouciant Kieran Perry foraging and cleaning up in the loose Caerphilly were now back in the home side's half. However some great counter attacking by Garn. saw them again break through for a certain try only for a certain Jamie Sollis to stop them again with a crushing cover tackle.
With the Caerphilly front five of Williams,Carey,Cousins,Dickinson and Billingham working superbly as a unit the lineouts were now being dominated by the outstanding Bobby Dickinson, who was winning a lot of Garn's own throw ins. This enabled will of the wisp scrum half Nathan Jones time to make some probing runs. With Bradley Hill and Stephen Williams controlling the midfield with some excellant line kicking Caerphilly were getting the upper hand again.
Some Garndiffaith indiscipline saw Caerphilly awarded a penalty and against the wind Bradley Hill put the ball between the posts from 30 metres.0-15 after 43 minutes.
A strike against the head by Joseph Carey saw the ball spun along the backs to Stephen Williams to make a trade mark run cutting through the Garndiffaith defence it was taken on by Luke Greenhaf and Brynmor Wilkes and put Caerphilly in a good attacking position. An injury to Sam McCombe saw him leave the field to be replaced by Jacob Wright. With only minutes remaining if Caerphilly thought the game was won then Garn had other ideas. Some very good play saw their No. 8 power through for a try which was converted 7-15.
Back came Caerphilly though and a charged down kick by Brynmor Wilkes which conveniently stayed in the 'bread basket' saw him sprint 50 metres for a try near the corner.A superb conversion by Bradley Hill taking the score to 7-22. Garndiffaith fought to the end and in the last minute scored a consolation try which went unconverted. The referee who showed a lot of cognizance throughout blew for the end of a very good game of rugby.

Final Score: Garndiffaith 12 Caerphilly 22

Caerphilly (Under 15's)50 - Abertysswg (Under 15's) 0
Dragons Cup (1st Round), October 28th 2007
Firstly in an attempt to educate our younger readers we will be in future giving a brief history of the towns and villages of the teams that we will be playing this season. This can be downloaded for G.C.S.E. coursework for a nominal fee paid in cash, preferably in a plain brown envelope. This is to be given to any of the coaches on a Wednesday or Sunday.
We start with Abertysswg, and we are grateful to local p historian Stephen B. Hill for much of this material.
ABERTYSSWG- Welsh for 'Binge's Birthplace' is situated in the Rhymney Valley with the River Tysswg flowing alongside. It was formerly known as Cwmparc- Welsh for 'Binge's Hometown'.The village was 'born' in April 1897 with the opening of the McLaren colliery. At that time there was only 3 farmhouses situated there. It soon changed when cottages were built for colliery officials. In 1899-1901 the first streets were built-Charles St.,Arthur St., Berkeley St.,and Hill Road.Such was the fame of the soon to be local hero 'Binge' that he got a road named after him before he was even born! Soon after The Green, and Alexander St., were built. In 1930 a severe landslide destroyed the main road and railway line with an estimated damage of £1 million which was a lot of money in those days. It's also a lot of money these days! 1950 was an historic year with the birth of the legendary Stephen B. Hill. A national Trust 'blue plaque' can be found on '1664' Hill Road(formerly a public house) the birthplace of this local legend. Another famous son of Abertysswg is Alwyn Lloyd-3 times Wales amateur snooker champion, and runner up in the world amateur championship.Obviously, he is not as famous as 'El Binge'. In 1969 after 72 years the Mclaren colliery closed, for the owners to persue their interest in Formula One motor racing. In 1990 twelve local public houses closed down, but in no way can this be associated with Binge's move down to Caerphilly in the same year.

The Game.
Yet another late kick off which has resulted in the Roman Catholic players and parents complaining that they have been missing evening mass. This has resulted in them having to say 100 Hail Mary's.And Suzanne(formerly known as Sue) staying in the clubhouse and drinking 20 bloody mary's!
With the clocks going back (full refund if you have a receipt) the game kicked off at 1.30 pm.If it was played the day before it would have been 2.30pm.
Two early kicks by outside half Bradley Hill found Caerphilly in Abertysswg's 22.However an handling error by Caerphilly saw the away side move into Caerphilly's half. For the first five minutes it was all Abertysswg, and it looked like Caerphilly had a game on their hands. However a quick line out by Bradley Hill which he threw to himself saw him make a lovely break from 60 metres out.He cut through the Abertysswg side before linking with scrum half Jacob Wright who in turn beat several players, before drawing the full back to put Kieran Perry over for a try under the posts which Stephen Williams converted.7-0 after 8 minutes. Abertysswg stormed straight back and moved upfield into Caerphilly's 22m.This was to no avail as again Bradley Hill running out of defence scythed through to reach the opponents 22m.,again it was Jacob Wright in support. Some strong defending held play up until Caerphilly were awarded a penalty in front of the posts. From a well worked penalty move Jamie Sollis stormed over for a try again converted by Stephen Williams 14-0.
Soon after, with hooker Joseph Carey in the scrum half position the ball was spun along the backs for centre Sam McCombe to slice through for a try.A superb conversion by Stephen Williams taking the score to 21-0 after 19 minutes. The Caerphilly pack were starting to have the upper hand in the set pieces with Joel Cousins,Joseph Carey and Rhys Williams dominating the scrums, and locks Bobby Dickinson and Rob Billingham securing the lineouts.
From 40 metres out hooker Joseph Carey took a strike against the head which saw Jamie Sollis pick up,and with the Abertysswg backs flat footed he outsprinted them all to score an excellent try which Stephen Williams again converted.28-0 after 23 minutes. With debute full back Brynmor Wilks having a very good game and working well with his fellow back three players Jordan Purcell and Ryan Davies. It all looked good for the home side.
It wasn't long before some ginglymus movements by the Caerphilly backline saw wing Ryan Davies out strip the defence to score a fine try in the corner.33-0 after 24 minutes.
It was all Caerphilly now and running the ball out of their 22m. saw them going through several phases to reach Abertysswg's line. From the resulting scrum Jacob Wright charged down a clearance kick and Bradley Hill was on hand to ground the ball for a try on the stroke of half time.

Half Time: Caerphilly(under 15's) 38 Abertysswg(Under 15's) 0

At half time with the game secure,Caerphilly made some changes with Darryl Graves,Luke Greenhalf coming on for Jamie Sollis and Ryan Davies. After 31 minutes Jacob Wright who'd had a superb first half was replaced by Nathan Jones. With the Caerphilly pack dominant, and with flankers Adam Clark and Kieran Perry everywhere in the loose it looked like another score was imminent.Sure enough the ball was moved quickly along the backs for Stephen Williams to cut through for a 'trademark' try which he also converted.45-0 after 33 minutes.
Another substitution saw Gavin Davies replace Sam McCombe in the centre.A long 50m. kick by Bradley Hill put Caerphilly into their opponents 22.The ball was soon moved along the threequarters and a superb long pass by Stephen Williams found Wing Jordan Purcell. He was surrounded by several defenders and it looked like there was no way through.Incredibly he twisted and wriggled his way through all of them to score an excellent try.50-0
With just 8 minutes of the second half gone the referee being solicitous blew up for full time as Caerphilly had reached the 50 point mark.
Our encomium to Abertysswg and to their coaches who showed magnanimity in defeat.

Newport HSOB (Under 15's) 19 - Caerphilly (Under 15's) 39
Sunday 21st October 2007

AN APOLOGY

In the Mountain Ash match report on 7th October, we outlined plans for our tour to the beautiful Island of Bali. Unfortunately this should have read Barry Island. We sincerely apologise for this error on our part, and we can assure everyone that it was a genuine mistake. We do not wish to be accused of mendacity. It was not a deliberate misinterpratation to encourage new players to join the under 15's. Therefore to the 33 new players who turned up for training on Wednesday we apologise unreservedly if you feel that you have been misled in any way. In particular to the lad who turned up from Pembroke, we are more than happy to reimburse you with your train fare. We hope that this news will not deter all you boys from staying with the club. Remember Barry Island has many fine points as well ......We'll get back to you on that one.

We were wondering before the game what H.S.O.B. stood for?.....No we won't go there again! After last weeks endeavours we were not taking any chances this week. All cars were equipped with essentials- packed lunches, flasks of soup, hot water bottles and blankets.Or, in Tanya's and Suzanne's (formerly known as Sue) case -1/2 ounce golden virginia and a packet of Rizlas! Apparently membership of the AA and RAC had increased ten fold in the Caerphilly area over the last seven days. So off we went through Machen past John Wright's house, past Kim Davies's house (Meridian Blinds-free quotations on request tel. 01443-819010) onto the M4 and finally somewhat miraculously to the Roman town of Caerleon for the match. Yet again another fine Sunday morning. We were hoping for a veritable feast of running rugby-not like the night before. The game started with the heavier Newport pack taking early control. They were playing to their strength in a state of gradualness. After five minutes a loose pass by Caerphilly near their own line saw HSOB pounce for a try near the posts which was converted 7-0. This early dominance by Newport was however transient, for back came Caerphilly with an excellent break by birthday boy Sam McCombe(with one 'o' not two) who found Jamie Sollis in support, onto Bradley Hill who put flying wing Jordan Purcell over for a try-7-5. This stung HSOB back into action and after 16 minutes their well drilled pack had taken control and with some good rucking scored an unconverted try-12-5. Caerphilly were starting to have the upper hand in the line-outs and a steal by Rob Billingham took some pressure off Caerphilly. The away side were now getting their act together and the pack were upping the tempo. A storming run by Jamie Sollis found Joseph Carey in support who linked with Stephen Williams then onto Kieran (with an 'a 'not an 'o') Perry who was just tackled into touch short of the line. Caerphilly were now in a good field position to launch an attack, and sure enough up stepped Jamie Sollis to storm over for a try 12-10 after 21 minutes. The Caerphilly back row of Perry, Sollis and Adam Clark were now dominating the loose play. With half time approaching a strike against the head by Joseph Carey saw Sollis pick up on the half way line and run 40 metres before linking with Jordan Purcell who was tackled just short of the line.

Half Time: Newport H.S.O.B. 14 - Caerphilly 10

Caerphilly made a few substitutions at half time with Gavin Davies and Brynmor Wilks coming on for Luke Greenhalf and Tom Maloney. With the game finely balanced the first score was going to be very important. Caerphilly came storming out of the blocks with a break from Sollis who found Brynmor Wilks in support, who made a good run but superb defence stopped him short of the line. From the resulting line-out Jamie Sollis nearly went over, and from the ruck scrum half Jacob Wright forced his way over for a try. The conversion narrowly missed by Stephen Williams 14-15 after 34 minutes. With outside-half Bradley Hill starting to dominate in the backs Caerphilly were showing more fight, unlike the first half which was kind of moribund. After 32 minutes Newport failed to find touch and the ball was run back by Wilks, the ball became diffuse through Sollis, Hill and Jordan Purcell who went over for an excellent try in the corner. Stephen Williams narrowly missing the conversion. 14-20. Caerphilly were now permanently camped in Newport's half and their fitness was a big factor. Another change with wing Ryan Davies coming on for Tom Maloney. He was soon into the game with a good run down the touchline. Newport came back with with some good handling from the backs which saw their wing in the clear but a superb covering tackle by Stephen Williams saved the day. Another substitution saw Nathan Jones replace Jacob Wright at scrum half after 52 minutes. Caerphilly now had all the territory but needed another score to give them a good cushion. It wasn't long coming, Bradley Hill found himself at scrum half at a ruck and put in a good downfield kick. This was well chased by Ryan Davies, and the ball popped up to Kieran Perry who raced away for a try, which was converted by Stephen Williams 14-27. Back came Newport into Caerphilly's 22 but a superb cover tackle by Wilks saw the ball spilled and picked up by Sollis who made the hard yards upfield to ease the pressure. Newport came storming back and were now camped on Caerphilly's line. The ball was moved swiftly along the line for an excellent try near the corner. 19-27. Caerphilly had lapsed back into indolence, but soon upped the tempo. A great run by Sollis found Bradley Hill on his shoulder who sped through to leap over the cross bar for a trade mark try. Williams added the conversion 19-34. with 2 minutes remaining. What seemed another aeon benefited Caerphilly with Perry and Adam Clark on the charge once again linking with Jamie Sollis who put Ryan Davies clear to sprint away for a try in the corner in the last minute.

Full Time: Newport H.S.O.B. 19 - Caerphilly 39

Team: McCombe, Maloney, S.Williams, Greenhaf, Purcell, Hill (capt.) Wright, R.Williams, Carey, Cousins, Billingham, Candy, Perry, Sollis, Clark.

RTB Ebbw Vale (Under 15's) 17 - Caerphilly (Under 15's) 14
Sunday 14th October 2007
On a congenial autumnal morning, Caerphilly were away to RTB Ebbw Vale. What should have been a pleasant 30 minute drive i.e clear Sunday roads, plenty of by-passes etc.turned into a bit of a magical mystery tour. What started out as a convoy or is it a conga? of about ten cars from Caerphilly, ended up with one car at the ground and the others spread all over Blaenau Gwent. We were wondering what the RTB stood for. Now we know.."Right Turn Boys" Are the second team called LTB "Left Turn Boys"? Anyway with the help of mobile phones, air and sea rescue we finally got to the ground just as the floodlights were coming on.
The moral of the story is:
1-Never ever follow Scoop.
2-Don't say the ground is by the steelworks-they were flattened years ago.
3-Don't believe that Richie actually works in Ebbw Vale.
4-Never buy a Sat Nav from Netto.
The game finally kicked off at 12.35 (not sure if am.or pm.) the boys just had enough time to shave off the beards which they had acquired on the journey up.
Straight from the kick off RTB were on the attack, and it was some desperate covering by Caerphilly that saved the day. Some good lineout work by the trio of Rob Billingham, Rhys Williams and Joel Cousins enabled Bradley Hill to put in a long touch finder to ease some of the RTB pressure.
After 14 minutes it was all RTB and a neat grubber kick in the 22 aided by a couple of Caerphilly handling errors, saw the home side score a well deserved try which was converted 7-0.
Back came Caerphilly with a break by Bradley Hill, which was taken on by Ryan Davies but good RTB defence was proving a tough nut to crack. The game was moving from half to half but Caerphilly continued to make some unforced handling errors. Another probing touchfinder from Hill saw Bobby Dickinson steal a lineout, but again the ball was fumbled in the backs. Caerphilly were trying to play too much running rugby, rather than play 'percentage' rugby. A 22m drop out by RTB found full back Sam McCoombe who was rock solid as usual. He made a surging run and linked with centre Anthony Davies who got held up near the line.Caerphilly had a penalty 10m out which they decided to run, only for the ball to be knocked on again! This was driving everyone R ound T he B end. All boys who bought pairs of stick mitts from the club shop can return them for a full refund.
Caerphilly were now more settled and starting to show more shape. A strong run from Anthony Davies on the RTB 22 set up a ruck near the line, and from this prop Rhys Williams (in his new go faster shorts) drove over for a try. The away support went wild, the noise was deafening of richter scale proportions, windows were breaking everywhere. Then it was realised it was actually only one voice- Rhys's mother Sue! Fingers were crossed everywhere that it would be his last try! A superb conversion by Stephen Williams tied the score at 7-7 on 30 minutes.
RTB came storming back and a try looked forthcoming. A great cover tackle by Anthony Davies, and some stout defence by the pack with Kieran (spelt with an a not an o) Perry, Adam Clark and Jacob Wright to the fore managed to keep RTB off the line.It was all Ebbw Vale now,but the half time whistle went which brought a great sigh of relief to Caerphilly.

Half Time: RTB Ebbw Vale 7 - Caerphilly 7

A collection was taken at half time with the intention to 'persuade' the Caerphilly coaches to substitute Rhys in case he scored again. The response was unbelievable, people were coming from miles around donating money, local glazing firms were particularly generous. Rumour had it that Bob Geldof and Bono were on the phone enquiring how we managed to raise so much money in such a short space of time. The coaches thought that they knew what RTB stood for- "Return To Basics" Caerphilly were playing like Wales did against Fiji, and needed to settle down, gain territory and play in the opponents half. A few substitutions were made with scrum half Nathan Jones unable to continue with a dead leg. Jacob Wright moving from No.8 to replace him,and Jordan Purcell coming onto the wing with Brynmor Wilks moving to flanker.

Kick Off was delayed for 15 minutes to allow two Securicor vans to leave the field. The second half started with Caerphilly straight out of the blocks into the home sides 22. A strike against the head by Joseph Carey saw the ball moved to Jordan Purcell who made a darting run but the defence was solid. The first five minutes saw Caerphilly a permanent fixture in the RTB half. However a loose ball saw the home side break away at pace, and this resulted in a penalty to them. This was well struck taking the score to 10-7.
Two minutes later and yet later another handling error by Caerphilly. This saw RTB break downfield from 40 metres for an excellent which was superbly converted. 17-7 after 40 minutes. With the game to-ing and fro-ing Bradley Hill and Stephen Williams were trying to lead from the front with some cutting breaks. Soon they were back in the home sides 22 and a scything break from Stephen Williams saw him link with Bradley Hill who went under the posts. Or was it over the posts AKA Shane Williams? A minute later when Bradley finally came to ground to score the try- Stephen Williams slotted the conversion. 17-14.
This score galvanised RTB who stormed upfield to Caerphilly's 22, they quickly established quick ruck ball, and created an overlap for a certain try, only for the ball to be knocked on. It must be contagious! It was now looking like the next score would be the winner. Bobby Dickinson stole a lineout on RTB's 22, and a good drive from Joel Cousins and Rob Billingham took the pack nearer to the line. But again some resolute defence kept Caerphilly out. A substitution saw Tom Maloney come onto the wing to replace Ryan Davies who had a very good game. The match was still moving from half to half with both sides looking for openings, and it was anyones game.
And then it happened! Yes, after 53 minutes Securicor were back from the weighbridge with news of a nice little sum, which was enough for prop Rhys Williams to be substituted! Ear Plugs were removed, Players scrum caps thrown to the touchline, and church services were resumed. Thomas Candy moved into the forwards, and the game was on a knife edge.
With the clock ticking down,Caerphilly ran the ball out of their half and got into the opponents 10metre line. Some strong defending forced Caerphilly into touch, for the R eferee T o B low for full time. The home side had held out for a deserved victory. A match well refereed, and good sportsmanship from RTB's coaches and supporters. Wish it was like this every week! The Post Match analysis from the coaches gave the players a R ight T horough B al****ing. And without wanting to give too much astringent criticism, some of the players were being obtuse to team instructions. However this is not to denigrate the team on their performance.
After the match all the parents headed back to the clubhouse for a well deserved glass of ale, only to find that all the glasses had mysteriously broken 40 minutes earlier! Sorry Sue!

Team: McCoombe, Wilks, A.Davies, S.Williams, R.Davies, Hill, Jones, R.Williams, Carey, Cousins, Billingham, Dickinson, Perry, Wright, Clark.
Substitutes: Maloney, Purcell, Candy, Robbins.

Caerphilly scorers: Rhys Williams (try of the game), Bradley Hill (try) Stephen Williams 2 conversions.

Caerphilly (Under 15's) 54 - Mountain Ash(Under 15's) 7
Sunday 7th October 2007
This was Caerphilly's first game for a fortnight. The previous Sunday's game against Llandaff being cancelled by them very late.Llandaff is a place which is famous for Roald Dahl,BBC Wales, and that huge church -Charlotte. But not very famous for U-15's rugby allegedly!
Anyway,on a beautiful autumnal morning perfect for open rugby Caerphilly entertained Mountain Ash.After just two minutes into the game Thomas Candy stole the ball on a Mountain Ash line out. This saw the backs move the ball swiftly along the line for left wing speedster Ryan Davies to out sprint the covering defence and score from 35 metres out.Soon after the home side were on the attack again from 40 metres out when Joel Cousins showed good hands taking a pass around his ankles, the move was taken on by Bobby Dickinson who made a foraging run upfield. On his shoulder was Joel Cousins again, who went over for a try in the corner.
Mountain Ash fought back and were now in Caerphilly's 22 and a score looked possible. However a good clearance kick by outside-half Anthony Davies was chased upfield by Kieron Perry who gathered the ball but was just held up short of the line. From the resulting scrum hooker Joseph Carey took a strike against the head which saw centre Gavin Davies storm over for a try which went unconverted.15-0 after 13 minutes.
Shortly after, the away side looking to get some points on the board narrowly missed a penalty kick from 30 metres.Mount's occupation of the Caerphilly half however was largely ephemeral. The home forwards were now dominant, and a drive upfield with Rhys Williams,Adam Clark and Jamie Sollis to the fore saw diminutive winger Tom Moloney score in the corner.20-0 after 20 minutes.
Two strikes against the head in quick succession by Joseph Carey had Caerphilly on the attack again, only for them to be penalised near the line. However Mount failed to find touch, resulting in Bradley Hill counterattacking from 60 metres out then passing onto Sam McCoombe who out sped the defence to score. An excellent conversion from Bradley Hill on the stroke of half time.

Half Time: Caerphilly 27 Mountain Ash 0

The second half saw Caerphilly make several changes, with Darryl Graves,Rob Billingham, and Nathan Jones starting. These fresh legs kept the momentum of the first half going.Another take against the head, saw the ball kicked into Mount's 22,and a strong charge by Adam Clark enabled Anthony Davies to run in for a try.
Soon after a huge kick downfield by Bradley Hill, saw the home pack nearly drive over, but were held up short of the line.It was all Caerphilly pressure now,and a poor kick by Mountain Ash was gathered by Bradley Hill who cooly dropped a goal. This was probably the only time the side have dropped a goal in junior rugby! May it be the first of many Brad!
Mountain Ash were becoming increasingly querulous in the game. And this was having a detrimental effect on the team. A superb kick by Gavin Davies caught Mount on the backfoot, and the ball was recycled to the backs onto Tom Maloney who knocked on with the line at his mercy.
Shortly after Man Of The Match Kieron Perry broke away from his own half, and kicked ahead, the ball bouncing up into his hands to score the try of the match under the posts. He was so far ahead of his teamates that he duly converted the try as well! 42-0 to Caerphilly. A lapse of concentration saw Mount peel off a maul close to the try line and score a good try which was converted.
Back came Caerphilly, who were now winning most of Mounts scrum ball.A quick heel saw centre Gavin Davies break through and pass to Jacob Wright who tore through to score yet another try.
The lassitude of the Mountain Ash side was now showing, and another take against the head by the home pack, saw Sam McCoombe kick downfield for Anthony Davies to follow up and score his second try, which he also converted.

Final Score: Caerphilly 54 Mountain Ash 7

Caerphilly (Under 15's) 22 - Talywain (Under 15's) 0
Sunday 23rd September 2007
Firstly, our sincere thanks to Surf Telecoms a subsidary of Western Power for supplying and sponsoring our new home Kooga kit. More details are shown on the website. Anyone requiring more information about this company please contact Stephen Hill on 07900 162540.

Secondly, congratulations to Under 15's Director of Rugby Tony 'Fat Boy' Williams for finishing 154th. in the recent Elvis lookalike competition in Porthcawl. A bit of a mistake impersonating the young Elvis! Not to worry Tony, it's all behind (and in front) of you now! Tony who said that Elvis was "always on my mind" has kindly written this report.

On a cold and grey Caerphilly morn another new Caerphilly kit was worn. It's not Umbro...It's not Umbro. And the mothers cry. Cause if there's one thing that they don't need it's for the brand new colours to bleed. It's not Umbro...It's not Umbro. Canterbury, don't you understand we now use the Kooga brand. But we may use you again some day....

Early pressure from Caerphilly had Talywain on the backfoot, but resolute defending kept the home side at bay. However after 5 minutes the ball was swiftly moved along the Caerphilly backs for Jordan Purcell to race over in the corner.Stephen Williams narrowly missing the conversion. Another superb counter attack saw Jordan again nearly scoring. It seemed only a matter of time before Caerphilly would score again.Sure enough 35 metres out and a strike against the head by hooker Joseph Carey caught the Talywain backs by surprise. A quick feed fom Jacob Wright to Fly half Bradley Hill who moved the ball quickly along the threequarters for Jordan Purcell to score his second try in the corner. Bradley just missing the conversion. The home pack were now starting to dominate the set pieces. The lineout was functioning well with Joseph Carey, Joel Cousins, Rhys Williams and Bobby Dickinson performing as an organised unit. After 20 minutes injuries to Talywain's front row, and with no substitutes available, meant passive scrums for the remainder of the game.

Half Time: Caerphilly 10 - Talywain 0

With a good old fashioned half time rollocking Caerphilly were told to up the intensity. And straight from the kick off they ran the ball along the backs which resulted in Ryan Davies outsprinting the defence to dive over for a try. Stephen Williams narrowly missing the conversion from the touchline. It was all Caerphilly now and after 35 minutes Bradley Hill put in a lovely chip kick which bounced up perfectly for Gavin Davies to score near the posts. Eat your heart out Freddie Michalak! Stephen Williams converted. 22-0. The forwards were now getting the upper hand where Darren Ginge and Caleb Ball were prominent. The back row of Jamie Sollis, Adam Clark and Kieron Perry were everywhere as usual. Talywain continued to kick the ball upfield which was bread and butter to full back Sam McCoombe who was having a good game.
With 25 minutes remaining, it looked like the floodgates would open. However the numerous uncontested scrums which resulted from too many errors, had a detrimental effect on the game slowing up possession and intensity. Fair play to Talywain they kept up their pride and continued to battle until the end. With a little bit more confidence and ambition in their backs the score would have been closer. With minutes left the stalemate was nearly broken when Stephen Williams made a superb break running 40 metres before getting tackled 10 metres short of the line. A scrappy game in not very good conditions ended shortly after.

Final Score: Caerphilly 22 Talywain 0
Scorers: Purcell 2 tries, R.Davies try, G.Davies try. Williams conversion.

Peter Alan Man-Of-The-Match Joseph Carey.

Next Fixture: Sunday 30th September v Llandaff (Away).
All players meet in the car park formerly known as Nettos at 10.00 am.

Ystrad Mynach (Under 15's) 14 - Caerphilly (Under 15's) 12
Sunday 16th September 2007
Caerphilly's second match of the season away to Ystrad Mynach ended in a loss, but it was a game that they could and should have won. In a hard physical encounter the first 25 minutes were a stalemate with both sides evenly matched. However Caerphilly had their chances to break the deadlock. A dropped pass near the try line and wing Jordan Purcell being held up in the corner after a superb run down the touchline were, chances that proved to be costly. With half time fast approaching, wing Jordan Purcell put the Ystrad defence on the back foot, and popped to Jamie Sollis who crashed over for a try. Stephen Williams narrowly missed the conversion.

Half-time: Ystrad Mynach 0 - Caerphilly 5

Two minutes into the second half with Caerphilly well positioned on Ystrad's 22 metre line, an interception saw Ystrad's centre sprint 70 metres upfield for a try that was converted. From the restart the home side were back in Caerphilly's 22 and good driving from the pack resulted in a push over try that was duly converted. In the space of seven minutes Caerphilly had conceded 14 points. This was a wake up call for Caerphilly and they battled their way into Ystrad's half and a score looked imminent. Caerphilly now had all the territory and with ten minutes remaining indiscipline from Ystrad's forwards saw the home side loose two players for foul play. Taking advantage of this situation Adam Clarke drove over for a try which was superbly converted by Stephen Williams. With minutes to go and camped on the Ystrad line it looked certain that the winning score would come. Jamie Sollis looked to have crashed over only to be held up over the line. This was to be the last play of the game and a 13 man Ystrad held out for the win.

Final score: Ystrad Mynach 14 - Caerphilly 12 (Tries: Clarke, Sollis. Conversion: Williams)
