Girls U'17 Tour Match played at Llandovery RFC, Sunday 13th May 2007
Kick off:-1:15pm
Half time score:- Whitland & Carmarthen U’17 5-0 Caerphilly Tigers U’17
Referee:-Unknown
Weather:-Cold and very wet
Caerphilly's Man of the Match:-Bethan Fox-Mabe (chosen by the referee)

Full Time:- Whitland & Carmarthen U’17 12-12 Caerphilly Tigers U’17

Caerphilly Tigers ended their season with an end of season tour to Manorbier, near Tenby. On the way home they stopped at Llandovery RFC to participate in the Ospreys & Scarlets Region RAF fair play festival. The weather was horrible. Due to lack of numbers it was decided Whitland & Carmarthen would join forces and play a full 15 a side game against the Tigers.

The game quickly descended into the size of the West Walians against the skill of the Tigers. The 1st half was mainly played between the 2 22s with neither side really doing anything productive. This was mainly due to the ball being so wet it was difficult to control. A high kick that squirmed free allowed Whitland & Carmarthen to gather the ball and cross for a try just before Half time.

In the second half the Tigers began to take control of the game and push the bigger side backwards at numerous occasions. Bethan Fox-Mabe was outstanding in her workrate and made dozens of telling tackles. Honourable mentions must also go to Hollie Williams and Paris Nicholas for their defensive work. A tap penalty near the line saw the Tigers set up a rolling maul. It rumbled over the line and collapsed. The referee awarded the try and last person up was Paris Nicholas to claim the try. No sooner had the Tigers scored than a lapse in concentration allowed Whitland & Carmarthen to score within a minute. This was converted and the Tigers were 12-5 down. With time up and last play called the Tigers got a penalty on the halfway line. A tap by Amy Roberts fed Hollie Williams who made fully 30 metres. She was brought down but very quick ruck ball fed Paris Nicholas in space. Paris never needs a second look at space and went through and scored under the sticks. The players all jumped in the air but the conversion still had to be kicked. With no tee and sodden ground it was by no means a foregone conclusion but Bethan Fox-Mabe got good contact on the ball. It sailed through the posts, the final whistle went and the game was drawn.

After the match, Head Coach Gareth Lewis said, “A draw was a fair result in the game. We showed lots of character against a physically bigger team and held our nerve to tie it up at the end. It finished a difficult season for us but I’m sure and optimistic that next season things will change. The league this year has been a shambles but next year we will work tirelessly to sort it out. I’d like to thank my coaching team for the past season. We will all move on now and look forward to a bright future.!

Friendly Girls U'17 Tour Match played home at Caerphilly RFC, Friday 16th March 2007
Kick off:-7:15pm
Half time score:- Caerphilly Tigers U'17 0-15 Phillip Pocock School
Referee:-Matthew Burford (WRU)
Weather:-Fine and Crisp
Caerphilly's Man of the Match:-The Whole Squad!

Full Time:- Caerphilly Tigers U'17 0-20 Phillip Pocock School

Caerphilly Tigers played Phillip Pocock School from Ontario, Canada on Friday night in front of a large vocal crowd at Virginia Park. The Canadian game is based on a very strong school structure, with Phillip Pocock School boasting 3,400 pupils. Their rugby team consisted of their ice hockey team, playing ice hockey in the winter and rugby in the summer!

The game kicked off and right from the start the physicality of the Canadians was enormous. The Caerphilly girls were not used to this and were flying backwards at regular intervals. After a scoreless first 10 minutes confidence began to grow in the Tigers ranks and all girls started putting their hands up and allowed themselves to be counted. Particular mentions must go to Kirstie Greening, Rachael Rajah and Emma Turner for the ferocity of their hits. 2 mistakes in 3 minutes allowed the Canadians to go over for 2 unconverted tries. Sara Prosser was introduced to the fray after the customary injury to Bethyn Davies and she performed some barnstorming runs in midfield. The half ended with the last move of the half being a very well worked Canadian try in the corner.

The second half was a different prospect. The Tigers pegged back the Canadians for 22 of the 29 minutes played in the second half. The backline axis of Paris Nicholas, Bethan Fox-Mabe and Hollie Williams time and time again probing deep into enemy territory but could not force their way over the line for the deserved score. By now hits were flying in from everywhere with the Canadians far more used to the physicality than their Welsh hosts. The Tigers did not budge though and the game as a spectacle was the best ever seen by the Tigers coaching staff. With 21 minutes gone of the second half disaster struck. The ball got dropped in midfield which allowed a Canadian boot in to hack forward. Katie John failed to collect the ball and it popped into a grateful Canadian pair of hands to run in from 30 metres. Surprisingly the conversion was missed and the score stood at 20-0. The game ended abruptly on 29 minutes gone when a Canadian girl knocked herself out. With the clock not being stopped in girls games time elapsed and a pulsating game drew to a close.

After the game a proud Tigers Coach, Gareth Lewis exclaimed, “That is the best performance we have ever put in. They are by far the best opposition we have ever faced and you feel if we were playing a welsh side we’d have lost by 100+ points. The challenge now for our girls is to back up that performance in our domestic league. We have now shown beyond any doubt what we can compete with the best and mustn’t let our minds beat us before the games start. They were new opposition and we approached the game with a new attitude. We have 3 league games left and with today’s attitude and approach 3 wins isn’t above us. Let’s end this season on a high!”

Friendly Girls U'17 Match played away at Llantwit Major RFC, Sunday 28th January 2007
Kick off:-1:15pm
Half time score:- Cynon Valley & Llantwit Major U'17 10-5 Caerphilly Tigers U'17
Referee:-Unknown
Weather:-Very Very Very Cold
Caerphilly's Man of the Match:-Amy Roberts

Full Time:-Cynon Valley & Llantwit Major U'17 15-10 Caerphilly Tigers U'17

Caerphilly Tigers travelled to Llantwit Major RFC on Sunday to help launch the new Llantwit Major Girls and Women's sides. The Tigers took a 17 player strong squad but, with the exception of Cynon Valley Ba-Ba's, the turnout from other teams in the East Region was very poor. After a morning of skills the afternoon was due to be a tournament but the poor turnout left the Tigers U'17 side playing a combined side of Cynon Valley and Llantwit Major.

The Tigers travelled without influential captain, Bethyn Davies, and try scoring machine, Paris Nicholas. Right from the first whistle in a bitterly cold afternoon the atmosphere was hostile. The Tigers started the game by committing a couple of high tackles and were penalised for them. This served in rising tensions and touchline abuse from the extremely large watching crowd. Cynon Valley and Llantwit Major, playing with the considerable slope 1st half, opened up with 2 tries in the 1st 15 minutes, leaving the Tigers 10 points adrift. There were many horrible hits going in from both sides as the referee tried manfully to keep the game in check. If it weren't for good officiating this game could have easily descended into farce earlier than it did. Before half time the Tigers hit back with a first ever try for front row forward Kirstie Greening. The half time score was 10-5.

The half time team talk involved the coaching staff pleading with the girls to try and keep their heads and not let the game boil over, the Tigers are a small side and cannot be drawn into a forward battle. The 1st 10 minutes of the second half were top draw. Using continuity skills born out of hours of training the Tigers laid siege. The reward came when second row, Laura Lewis, went over for her first ever try in a Tigers shirt to bring the game level. From here the game went wrong. Firstly Jodie Smith got penalised for her 3rd high tackle of the game and got a deserved yellow card for her troubles. With the Tigers a player short they had to defend for virtually the rest of the game. With things getting personal the game spilled over. A disgusting punch by the Cynon Valley and Llantwit Major No.9 saw Megan Higgins floored without an opportunity to defend herself. It was all in from here and the game was a 29 player brawl with numerous punches and worse being given. It took a long time for things to calm down, when the dust settled the red card was issued to the player who started it. The Tigers were warned by their coaches that any player from here who got involved in any rough stuff would never play for the Tigers again. With 2 minutes to go the Tigers conceded a try. With no time left on the clock it was all over, the Tigers going down 15-10 but the game of rugby was tarnished.

After the game, Tigers coach Gareth Lewis said, "I am disgusted and appalled by what went on at the end. The punch on Megan was totally uncalled for and we are lucky she isn't seriously hurt. There are a number of things that went on today that don't belong in rugby. I am angry at the moment but I know we won't cause anything again like what happened today or the instigator will never play for our side again. I gave the girls a stern talking to about what representing us meant and what we expect of them. Saying that I do not believe we were the cause of that today, it was a cowardly act that started it but we should not have reacted. It will not happen again. We have RTB Ebbw Vale in the league on Wednesday and will get a couple of key players back. The girls were totally committed today and with that commitment managed in the correct way we are a force to be reckoned with. We now need to hit teams where it hurts, on the scoreboard...."

East Wales Girls U'17 Match played at home Virginia Park, Saturday 20th January 2007
Kick off:-5:30pm
Half time score:- Caerphilly Tigers U'17 19-10 Cynon Valley Ba-Ba's U'17
Referee:-Freddie Brookes
Weather:-Cold and blustery
Caerphilly's Man of the Match:-Bethan Fox-Mabe

Full Time:-Caerphilly Tigers U'17 24-15 Cynon Valley Ba-Ba's U'17

Caerphilly Tigers got off the mark in the East Wales Girls Under 17 League by recording a magnificent victory in a very hard fought game on Saturday against the Cynon Valley Ba-Ba's. The Tigers had a very difficult preparation for the game with a number of girls pulling out on the day, leaving the Tigers with a bare 15, which included 10 backs. Showing remarkable bravery, Hollie Saunders, Rachael Rajah and Amy Roberts agreed to go into the pack. Fortunately Cynon Valley also had front row problems so the game was agreed to start with uncontested scrums.

The game started and it was clear from the outset this was 2 very determined teams on the pitch. It was the Tigers that started quickest. A scrum on the 22m line in the middle of the pitch saw Tigers' No.8 and captain, Bethyn Davies pick up and run at the Cynon Valley defence. Bethyn beat 3 would-be tacklers en route to forcing her way over the try line to open the scoring. She converted her own try to leave the score 7-0. From the restart the Tigers were back down in Ba-Ba territory. Wing, Sophie John got penalised for a horrible high tackle and Cynon Valley capitalised. Impressive scrum half, Hannah Evans beat a weak Tigers tackle and outpaced the defence to run in from fully 80 metres. Hollie Williams kept up the pursuit and forced Evans to touchdown in the corner leaving a difficult conversion that went unpunished. 7-5 to the Tigers after 10 minutes. The next try of the game was one that gave the Tigers coaching team great satisfaction. The Tigers recycled the ball from ruck and maul time in the drive that was over half the field. After countless phases it was under 14 captain, and first time under 17 outside half, Bethan Fox-Mabe that showed brute force to get over the try line and ground the ball. Bethyn Davies showed a rare miss with the conversion and the Tigers were 12-5 to the good. To their great credit within 3 minutes the defecit was cut again when Cynon Valley's openside flanker, Natalie Lineham went over. By now half time was approaching and Tigers prop, Kirstie Greening had turned up after working during the day to take her place on the bench. 2 minutes later try machine Paris Nicholas picked up from the base of a ruck and ran down a vacated blindside to score from 50 metres. Unfortunately this was Paris's last involvement in the game as she has been ill all week and the illness forced her off the pitch before the conversion could be taken. This kept up a remarkable scoring streak that has reached 15 games now for Paris, the last game she didn't score a try was fully 1 year ago when the Tigers opened 2006 with a 37-0 loss to Llandaff North. Bethyn Davies resumed normal service and slotted the conversion and Kirstie Greening replaced Paris, forcing a shuffle in the Tigers Team. Amy Roberts moved back to her normal position of outside half, Kirstie came into the front row and Bethan Fox-Mabe showed tremendous character by replacing Paris at scrum half. Half time was reached with the score at 19-10.

The start of the second half saw the Tigers half asleep and Cynon Valley scored after 3 minutes with a try for full back Jade Cartwright. The game was now on a knife edge. The whole of the second half was played mainly between the 22s with Cynon Valley having about 70% off possession and territory. It took a full blooded defensive effort from the Tigers to hold out. Every player on the pitch stood up to the task. Training for the last fortnight has consisted on closing the opposition down when they are in possession, the Tigers never gave an inch and turned over the ball time and time again. Unfortunately attacking naivety meant the ball wasn't used all that well. This naivety meant the end of skipper Bethyn Davies who came in for punishment from a resolute Ba-Ba defence. With just 7 minutes to go a rolling maul from a lineout saw Sara Prosser ground the ball over the line. The referee was unsighted and concluded it was held up. From the resulting 5m scrum the ball was fed to Bethan Fox-Mabe who ran straight through the Cynon Valley outside half to go over. The conversion was missed but the Tigers had a handy lead at 24-15. The end of the game was all about trying to hold out the Cynon Valley attack. Finally a spilled ball in midfield saw the game come to a close and the Tigers had the win!

After the game a happy coach, Gareth Lewis, Said, "I am so proud tonight. I have been unable to take full coaching responsibilities recently due to an operation but James Chapron, Paul John, Sophie Davies and Sam Corns have been magnificent in getting these girls playing to a pattern and gameplan. From where they were last time out to now is unbelievable, the coaching team has done a brilliant job in getting the girls to recognise situations and react accordingly, this has been missing sometimes in the past. Thanks guys!

On the pitch the desperation to win now is there. From the captain right through the squad. Our defence was amazing out there tonight. The challenge now is to keep this up. I said right at the start of the season we have nothing to fear, now we need to get out there every game and show what we can do!"

East Wales Girls U'17 Match played at home Virginia Park, 7th October 2006
Kick off:-5:30pm
Half time score:- Caerphilly Tigers U'17 14-17 Newport U'17
Referee:-Freddie Brookes
Weather:-Cold and blustery
Caerphilly's Man of the Match:-Paris Nicholas

Full Time:-Caerphilly Tigers U'17 28-29 Newport U'17

Caerphilly Tigers suffered heartbreak in the East Wales Girls League when a last gasp try and conversion from Newport stole a dramatic victory. It was the first ever girls club league game in Wales, played at Virginia Park in front of a large crowd who left knowing, in no uncertain terms, what girls rugby is all about.

The Tigers were missing some key players, and asked usual number 8, Amy Roberts, to fill in at outside half. Newport started the strongest and scored 2 tries in the opening 4 minutes from Alexin Evan and Naomi Lhybrow to put a stunned Tigers side 12-0 down without really making a tackle. The game settled down with both sides fairly evenly matched. From a scrum in the middle of the park, prolific scrum half, Paris Nicholas picked up and darted under the sticks to give the Tigers a lifeline. Captain, Bethyn Davies converting. From here the game started to boil up with some ferocious hits going in from both sides. Emma Turner and debutant Abbie Parker deserve more than a mention for some superb defensive work. After 20 minutes Newport worked the ball wide and Naomi Lhybrow went in for her second try. The Tigers hit back and from turnover ball in a ruck just inside her own half, Amy Roberts beat the first line of defence and sprinted fully 55m to score under the posts, Bethyn Davies adding the extras, leaving the half time score at 17-14 to Newport.

The Second half started brightly for the Tigers with wave after wave of pressure. The Tigers picked and drove well a number of times sucking the Newport defence in, this left a gap by the side of the ruck which Paris Nicholas picked and went under the sticks to give the Tigers the lead, again, Bethyn Davies adding the conversion. As the half went on the hits started picking up in ferocity, with tempers raised a few times. Halfway through the half Newport drove over the line and last up with the ball was Natasha Sorensen to give Newport a 1 point advantage at 22-21. Neither side wanted to lose this and both defenses stood firm until 5 minutes from time Paris Nicholas broke through again and went over the line and rounded to put the ball behind the posts. Unfortunately for the Tigers she stepped over the dead ball line in the process, leaving the try disallowed and Newport cleared their lines. With 2 minutes to go she did it again, from the side of a ruck, beat the defence and sidestepped the fuillback, Naomi Lhybrow, to give the Tigers a late lead and seal her hat-trick. Bethyn Davies kicked her 4th conversion out of 4 and the Tigers lead 28-22 with 1 minute left on the clock. Newport kicked deep and the Tigers fumbled and gave Newport a last attack. It was all that Alexin Evan needed and she beat the 1st up tackler and went in for a try. With time up it was all on the conversion, it just sneaked over the bar and the lead changed hands for the 5th time in the game and the Tigers lost to the last kick.

The Tigers players were extremely upset by the lateness of the loss but coach, Gareth Lewis, commented, "I am proud of the girls today. We fought until the bitter death but it was not to be. It was a great example for girls rugby out there today and hopefully this is a sign of things to come in this league. What today proves is you have to start from the off and you can't afford to give teams a 12 point start. If we keep things going we will be a force to be reckoned with this year. I want to congratulate Abbie Parker, Hollie Saunders, Jodie Hannam and Rose Tilley who were all making their Tigers debuts today. If any new girls want to join, please call me on 07841436122."

East Regional 10-a-side Competition
Sunday 17th September
Abercwmboi RFC
The Tigers opened their 2006/7 campaign with a 10-a-side competition for all clubs within the East region, which comprises of the Dragons and Blues Regions. The competition saw a welcome start to competitive action for Cynon Valley Ba-Ba’s RFC and thanks goes to their coach, Lynne Jones, for organising the venue, food and photographs.

The day and season kicked off with the Tigers Under 17's side, led by new captain, Bethyn Davies and vice captain, Hollie Williams, taking on Newport Under 17's, bolstered by members of last season’s Garndiffaith Under 14's side that beat the Tigers a number of times. The first half was even until Newport scored a well worked try after very good work by their forwards to take a half time lead of 5-0. The second half saw the Tigers having to defend for large periods. The resolute defence that was missing many times last year was very pleasing to see for the coaching staff. 5 minutes from time, Bethyn Davies marked her captaincy debut with a try that tied the game up at 5-5. With full time approaching Newport’s scrum half, Emily Smith, passed the Tigers line and was too casual in putting the ball down enabling last season’s player of the year, Paris Nicholas, to put in a miracle tackle to push her over the dead ball line. A hashed drop out 22 saw Newport back on the attack. With the Tigers line begging the ball got turned over and Paris Nicholas dashed 95m to score the game winning try right on full time to win the game.

Final Score: Caerphilly Tigers (Under 17's) 10 - Newport (Under 17's) 5

Next game on was the first of a 2 legged tie between The Tigers Under 14's side and Cynon Valley Under 14's. The Tigers were helped by RTB Ebbw Vale’s Jade and Newport’s Carys. The game was the start of another new captaincy era for the Tigers with Bethan Fox-Mabe taking over the armband with Joanne Jones assisting. The 1st half saw another very even game with the Tigers sneaking a half time lead of 1 try to nil courtesy of Jade. The second half saw the Tigers cut loose and a solo try by Jade and a well executed dummy switch saw Joanne Jones run in from 40m to open up a good lead. With the last move of the game a horrible high tackle by Joanne Jones saw her deservedly reprimanded and a penalty try given to Cynon Valley.

Final Score: Caerphilly Tigers (Under 14's) 3 - Cynon Valley (Under 14's) 1

Next on the agenda was a clash against new opposition for the Tigers when they played Cynon Valley Under 17's. The Tigers produced a comprehensive performance to win comfortably 26-5 with tries coming from Hollie Williams (x2), Paris Nicholas and Bethyn Davies, with Bethyn converting 3. Full credit must go to Cynon Valley who hit back with a fantastic try of their own and showed huge spirit and never say die attitude.

Finals Score: Caerphilly Tigers (Under 17's) 26 - Cynon Valley (Under 17's) 5

The second leg of the Under 14's clash was a different affair with the Tigers under constant pressure. After trailing 1-0 at half time they hit back with a wonder try from Jade from fully 70m. 1 minute later the aptly nicknamed Titch, Katie John, followed this example by running in from 60m to put the Tigers 3 tries to the good on aggregate. Cynon Valley hit back hard with 2 tries to force the tie in to a tense last 2 minutes. Fortunately, Joanne Jones remembered her dummy and the whole field took it, including her team mates! She strolled home to tie the game and win the tournament 6-4 on aggregate

Final Score: Caerphilly Tigers (Under 14's) 3 - Cynon Valley (Under 14's) 3

The Final game of the day saw a decider by the 2 unbeaten Under 17's teams, Caerphilly Tigers and Llandaff North. A scrappy and poor quality game saw the tournament be decided on 2 Tigers mistakes, both capitalised by ex-Tiger, Aimee Williams, who scored 2 tries and a conversion.

Final Score: Caerphilly Tigers (Under 17's) 0 - Llandaff North (Under 17's) 12

The Tigers finished as winners of the under 14 tournament and runners up of the Under 17 tournament. Every Tigers played received a medal presented by Ospreys and Wales Lock, Ian Evans. When the day was over Tigers head coach, Gareth Lewis commented, “Today has been a massive success for the Tigers Squad, We have never won anything in the Tigers existence and we have a trophy and every player has a medal. I am bitterly disappointed in the way the Under 17's performed in the final game against Llandaff North but we must learn to handle pressure situations. Apart from that final game I cannot find any fault in anything we did throughout the day. It is early season and we are rusty but team spirit shone through. I have big hopes for this season and am confident we can turn over today’s result against Llandaff North and play the rugby we know we can play. We need new players to bolster the squad and I urge any person who reads this who knows a girl between 10-17 who would like to get involved with a fantastic bunch of girls to give me a ring on 07841 436122 and discuss how they can help us.”
