![]() Caerphilly Tigers would proudly like to congratulate Joanne Jones on being selected to Captain the East Wales Regional Under 14 side. Scrum Half Jo was the first Tiger to be selected for the Under 14 Regional side and got the honour of being asked to skipper the side for the 2006/7 season. Jo started off her captaincy with a trip to Gloucester on Feb 3rd to skipper the side in a friendly match against Gloucester County on Kingsholm, the home of Gloucester RFC. There certainly aren't many Caerphilly players in any age group who have graced English Premiership grounds! East Wales ran out victorious 17-12 in that game. She got her first East Wales cap last weekend against West Wales. Jo and her side ran out resounding winners of that game, 32-10. This is the start of a big career for the nippy little scrum half with full International honours a definite possibility!!Caerphilly Tigers Head Coach, Gareth Lewis, said, "Jo is an inspiration to all of us connected with the Tigers. In training she regularly more than holds her own against our senior under 17s, she is always present and never doesn't have a smile on her face. Behind that smile is a determination to better herself. It is a tribute to all her hard work that she is captain of this Regional side, especially as she is a year younger than most of the girls! Well done Jo!" Caerphilly County Borough's Community Rugby Development Officer, James Chapron, resounded, "It is fantastic to see players from Caerphilly Tigers going on to represent their Region, especially being asked to captain the side for this season! Caerphilly Tigers was set up to give girls from the local community a chance to play and enjoy rugby, to see these girls going on to get representative honours is excellent and hopefully Jo will be the first of many!" |
| East Wales Girls Under 14's match played at home Virginia Park, 12th November |
| Kick off:-2:30pm Date:-12/11/06 Half time score:- Caerphilly Tigers U'14 2-5 Cynon Valley U'14 Referee:-Nicola York (WRU) Weather:-Cold and dry Caerphilly's Man of the Match:-Bethan Fox-Mabe Full Time:-Caerphilly Tigers U'14 5-7 Cynon Valley U'14 Caerphilly Tigers Under 14 side played their first ever league match on a fresh, crisp day at Virginia Park. Their opponents were Cynon Valley Ba-Ba’s, greatly improved from the Abercwmboi tournament 2 months earlier. The Tigers hadn’t seen much action since that day and welcomed 6 debutants and were soon under the cosh with wave after wave of Cynon Valley attacks. Cynon Valley scored the first 3 tries of the day as the Tigers inexperience showed in all facets of play. They did rally though and hard working captain, Bethan Fox-Mabe showed super human strength to beat 4 defenders to force her way over for the Tigers first try on 17 minutes. Cynon Valley bounced back with 2 more tries leaving the Tigers struggling. Heart is something the Tigers have never lacked and some good work infield saw jinking scrum half, Joanne Jones go over just before half time to leave the Tigers trailing 5-2 at the break. After a very early second half score by the Ba-Ba’s the game was a different tale. Suddenly the fear of playing had gone and was replaced by a freedom and this lead for an extremely entertaining second half with both sides playing open rugby at will. Joanne Jones was fed by debutant winger, Angharad Thomas and sprinted home from 80 metres to bring the Tigers back in touch. Straight from the restart new centre, Holly Lintern smashed her opposite number to turn over the ball. The Tigers pressed but were held out by some great defence. Following a penalty for “playing the ball on the floor”, Joanne Jones’ quick thinking saw her jink over the line for the hat-trick to bring the score to 6-4. Cynon Valley hit back through the hugely impressive F.Jones who barged through the Tigers defence for her hat-trick With 3 minutes to go, Bethan Fox-Mabe capped an all action display but single-handedly making the tackle, jackling the ball, and broke away creating a 2v1 on the right hand touchline. She fed Joanne Jones who went home from 60 metres for her 4th try of the game. This was the last real action of the game but both sides left the field satisfied with their performance and the crowd left after watching a very good game of rugby. Special mention for the Tigers must go to debut making Holly Lintern, who made some bone crunching hits, and Angharad Thomas, who never stopped working and looked like she had played rugby all her life. Joanne Jones produced a fantastic display at scrum half and also scored 4 tries, but player of the game went to outside half and captain, Bethan Fox-Mabe. Bethan did the work of 5 players on the pitch made countless tackles and breaks. This was a good workout for the Tigers and all coaches and support network are looking forward to a season full of promise. | East Regional 10-a-side Competition Sunday 17th September Abercwmboi RFC |
| The Tigers opened their 2006/7 campaign with a 10-a-side competition for all clubs within the East region, which comprises of the Dragons and Blues Regions. The competition saw a welcome start to competitive action for Cynon Valley Ba-Ba’s RFC and thanks goes to their coach, Lynne Jones, for organising the venue, food and photographs.
The day and season kicked off with the Tigers Under 17's side, led by new captain, Bethyn Davies and vice captain, Hollie Williams, taking on Newport Under 17's, bolstered by members of last season’s Garndiffaith Under 14's side that beat the Tigers a number of times. The first half was even until Newport scored a well worked try after very good work by their forwards to take a half time lead of 5-0. The second half saw the Tigers having to defend for large periods. The resolute defence that was missing many times last year was very pleasing to see for the coaching staff. 5 minutes from time, Bethyn Davies marked her captaincy debut with a try that tied the game up at 5-5. With full time approaching Newport’s scrum half, Emily Smith, passed the Tigers line and was too casual in putting the ball down enabling last season’s player of the year, Paris Nicholas, to put in a miracle tackle to push her over the dead ball line. A hashed drop out 22 saw Newport back on the attack. With the Tigers line begging the ball got turned over and Paris Nicholas dashed 95m to score the game winning try right on full time to win the game. Final Score: Caerphilly Tigers (Under 17's) 10 - Newport (Under 17's) 5 Next game on was the first of a 2 legged tie between The Tigers Under 14's side and Cynon Valley Under 14's. The Tigers were helped by RTB Ebbw Vale’s Jade and Newport’s Carys. The game was the start of another new captaincy era for the Tigers with Bethan Fox-Mabe taking over the armband with Joanne Jones assisting. The 1st half saw another very even game with the Tigers sneaking a half time lead of 1 try to nil courtesy of Jade. The second half saw the Tigers cut loose and a solo try by Jade and a well executed dummy switch saw Joanne Jones run in from 40m to open up a good lead. With the last move of the game a horrible high tackle by Joanne Jones saw her deservedly reprimanded and a penalty try given to Cynon Valley. Final Score: Caerphilly Tigers (Under 14's) 3 - Cynon Valley (Under 14's) 1 Next on the agenda was a clash against new opposition for the Tigers when they played Cynon Valley Under 17's. The Tigers produced a comprehensive performance to win comfortably 26-5 with tries coming from Hollie Williams (x2), Paris Nicholas and Bethyn Davies, with Bethyn converting 3. Full credit must go to Cynon Valley who hit back with a fantastic try of their own and showed huge spirit and never say die attitude. Finals Score: Caerphilly Tigers (Under 17's) 26 - Cynon Valley (Under 17's) 5 The second leg of the Under 14's clash was a different affair with the Tigers under constant pressure. After trailing 1-0 at half time they hit back with a wonder try from Jade from fully 70m. 1 minute later the aptly nicknamed Titch, Katie John, followed this example by running in from 60m to put the Tigers 3 tries to the good on aggregate. Cynon Valley hit back hard with 2 tries to force the tie in to a tense last 2 minutes. Fortunately, Joanne Jones remembered her dummy and the whole field took it, including her team mates! She strolled home to tie the game and win the tournament 6-4 on aggregate Final Score: Caerphilly Tigers (Under 14's) 3 - Cynon Valley (Under 14's) 3 The Final game of the day saw a decider by the 2 unbeaten Under 17's teams, Caerphilly Tigers and Llandaff North. A scrappy and poor quality game saw the tournament be decided on 2 Tigers mistakes, both capitalised by ex-Tiger, Aimee Williams, who scored 2 tries and a conversion. Final Score: Caerphilly Tigers (Under 17's) 0 - Llandaff North (Under 17's) 12 The Tigers finished as winners of the under 14 tournament and runners up of the Under 17 tournament. Every Tigers played received a medal presented by Ospreys and Wales Lock, Ian Evans. When the day was over Tigers head coach, Gareth Lewis commented, “Today has been a massive success for the Tigers Squad, We have never won anything in the Tigers existence and we have a trophy and every player has a medal. I am bitterly disappointed in the way the Under 17's performed in the final game against Llandaff North but we must learn to handle pressure situations. Apart from that final game I cannot find any fault in anything we did throughout the day. It is early season and we are rusty but team spirit shone through. I have big hopes for this season and am confident we can turn over today’s result against Llandaff North and play the rugby we know we can play. We need new players to bolster the squad and I urge any person who reads this who knows a girl between 10-17 who would like to get involved with a fantastic bunch of girls to give me a ring on 07841 436122 and discuss how they can help us.” |
