Match Report by Mark Tamplin
Caerphilly breezed into the second round of the Konica Minolta Welsh Cup at Crumlin last weekend, outscoring the Division 5 East side 4 tries to 1.

Outside half Huw Lock celebrated his first team debut giving the visitors the lead on nine minutes with a well positioned drop goal from the 22 as Caerphilly made the most of a penalty miss by Kris Moses in the second minute.

Caerphilly opened their try count on 20 minutes. An explosive break down the left wing by Chris Ferris took Caerphilly deep into Crumlin territory, a clearance by the home side was collected and the ball moved to the right wing and in the hands of wing Chris Thomas. Powering up the wing, Thomas drew three tacklers before releasing back row Rhys Watkins to cross. Full back Nathan “Charlie” Gittings added the conversion

Eight minutes later Lock was also involved in Caerphilly’s second try. Flanker Chris Payne did exceptional to win loose ball on the floor as Caerphilly drove at the home side. Sam Feehan broke from the ruck, ball in hand Lock collected the ball in midfield drawing the Crumlin defence. Left wing Steffan Sankala popped up in midfield, creating an overlap allowing him to cross under the posts unopposed. Gittings adding the spoils and giving the visitors a 17-0 lead at half time.

Crumlin’s fate was sealed within 1 minute 20 seconds of the second half. A perfect restart from Lock saw the ball fall into the hands of prop Matthew Griffiths. Driving at the home side, Griffiths drew the Crumlin defence. Caerphilly recycling the ball quickly passed out wide and into the hands of Gittings. Cutting inside Gittings crossed between the posts unopposed, then added a father 3 points by converting the try.

Sankala grabbed his second try of the match on 56 minutes as Griffiths again made a driving break into the heart of the Crumlin defence. As the home side stalled the attack, slow ball was released to the backs throwing a wide ball into the hands of Sankala. Collecting out side, he powered his way to the left hand touchline. Gittings stepped up to add another 3 points with a touchline conversion, giving the visitors a 31 point lead.

Wholesale changes from both sides brought a different feel to the game on 20 minutes, in fact it was the home side that finished the game the stronger.
