| CAERPHILLY maintained their Welsh National League Division One East challenge with a four tries to two win at Riverside Park last Saturday.
Flighty Caerphilly wing, Steffan Sankala added the fourth try for the green and whites and a very important bonus point to keep his team, snapping at the heals of Pontypool at the top of the table. Rumney were reduced to fourteen only minutes into the game when referee, Alan Jenkins dished out a yellow card to lock, Mike Kelly for a blatant high tackle. Caerphilly fly half, Rhys Edwards slotted over the 40 metre penalty. Rumney were gifted golden opportunities through Caerphilly indiscipline to add points to the board during the first half but instead elected for lineout ball. Points in the bag were strewn aside and the hosts were kept to zero. A stolen Rumney lineout was used wisely by the visitors with forward play and three organised phases. The ball quickly spun out wide found winger, Chris Thomas putting full back, Nathan Gittings in space to score. Rhys Edwards added three more points before the half time whistle for a Caerphilly 11 – 0 lead at the interval. Hard graft and strong inroads by the Caerphilly forwards at the restart left the hosts all at sea. Chris Thomas drifted in of his wing and looking for work to barge his way in under the posts. Edwards converting. Rumney eventually moved off their zero in the 63rd minute with a try from fly half, James Thomas. Forwards and backs linking well and an elusive run in from Thomas to touch down at the posts. Thomas adding two more points for the conversion. Caerphilly extended their lead once again with a try from centre, Gareth Miles. Rumney wing, Tom Daly dived in at the corner all created from a quick tap penalty on 74 minutes. It appeared Caerphilly missed out on a very valuable bonus point as the game moved into injury time. That was, until, Steffan Sankala intercepted a pass from an attacking Rumney scrum to sprint home from inside his own 22 to score. Caerphilly entertain mid-table UWIC this Saturday at Virginia Park. Kick-off 2:30pm. |
